Author and Illustrator: Leo Vroman (1915-2014) was a Dutch-American poet, writer, painter, biologist and hematologist. After the war he joined an uncle in New York, where he worked as a researcher in the area of coagulation. In his field, his name immortalized in the 'Vroman-effect', recognition and detection of certain coagulation phenomena. He is seen as one of the biggest Dutch poets and has won almost every Dutch literary prize possible.
Since 1951 Vroman was an American citizen. In the United States he was longing for Holland. This led him to the - much quoted - words: "Rather homesick than Holland". He was appointed honorary citizen of Gouda.
